Chestnut grove canal Isola village
Discover the wealth of Isola’s ancestral castaniculture
A journey to the heart of the chestnut grove and its historic irrigation canal
Until recently, chestnut growing was the main source of income for Isola, and it is now part of the village’s heritage. Although it was gradually abandoned after the First World War, the ancestral chestnut grove is carefully tended and you can still see huge trees, more than a hundred years old, silhouetted against the sky.
You’ll discover an old irrigation canal in the heart of the chestnut grove, and an interpretation trail has been created along it.
The itinerary features ancient cobbled paths, terraced walls, oratories, barns with distinctive architectural features, the canal and its water diversion works, remarkable viewpoints, chestnut groves and a wide variety of flora and fauna.
At the end of the route, there is a spectacular viewpoint set in the middle of the cliffs, where you can observe the canal carved out of the rock, an extraordinary vestige of the work and technical skills of the ancient inhabitants.
